Multani Mitti for Skin: Benefits and How to Use It by Skin Type

Part of our complete guide to natural skincare.

Multani mitti (Fuller's earth) is a classic Indian clay used in face packs for generations. It is brilliant for certain skin types — and easy to overuse. Here is what it genuinely does, who it suits, and how to use it without leaving your skin tight and stripped.

Benefits of multani mitti

  • Absorbs excess oil. This is its superpower — it draws out oil and helps with shine, which is why it suits oily skin so well.
  • Deep-cleans pores. It helps lift dirt and congestion, useful for blackhead-prone and acne-prone skin.
  • Leaves skin looking fresh and matte after rinsing.

How to use multani mitti by skin type

  • Oily skin: mix with rose water into a paste, apply a thin layer, and rinse before it fully hardens. 1–2 times a week.
  • Combination skin: apply only to the oily areas (usually the T-zone), not the whole face.
  • Dry or sensitive skin: use sparingly or skip it — clay can be too drying. Mix with something hydrating like yoghurt or aloe, and keep it brief.

The golden rule: don't let it fully dry

The most common mistake is letting a clay mask dry rock-hard on the face. A fully cracked mask pulls moisture from the skin and can leave it tight and irritated. Rinse while it is still slightly tacky.

An honest note: multani mitti is excellent for oil control but drying by nature. It is a once-or-twice-a-week helper, not a daily product — and dry-skinned folks should go easy.

FAQ

Is multani mitti good for daily use?
No — 1–2 times a week is plenty. Daily use can over-dry the skin and trigger more oil.

Can dry skin use multani mitti?
Use it sparingly, mixed with something hydrating, and only occasionally. It suits oily and combination skin best.

Does multani mitti remove tan?
It can help skin look fresher and brighter, but real tan removal needs gentle exfoliation and sun protection over time.
