The mind-body connection

   When we talk about health and wellbeing we usually only refer to physical health. People are always so focused on eating healthy and making sure they visit their doctors for regular checkups. That is certainly a must, but the term health goes much more beyond just physical wellbeing. Our emotions affect our body in more profound ways that we can even imagine. Lately, a lot of light has been shed upon mental illness. Depression and anxiety have become increasingly common especially in the younger generation. Your beliefs about yourself and the world around you can highly influence your health, both physically and mentally.

 

   If you haven’t heard of the unconscious mind, it’s time to give Sigmund Freud’s book a read. He talks about how a lot of our actions and instincts stem from feelings and desires stored in the unconscious part of the brain. These are usually negative since we see them as a threat or something that is irrational. These emotions manifest themselves in some way of the other, and this is usually through our body. Chronic aches and pains that do not go away, exhaustion and problems like low blood pressure are just a few examples of how mental stress physically presents itself. Psychosomatic disorders are an example of instance of a physical illness or condition caused by a mental factor like stress or traumatic life events.

 

   A healthy mind is the hallmark of a healthy body. Spirit, mind, and body together help prevent diseases and promote good health. There are a few simple steps that we can take every day to ensure our emotional health is managed.

 

   Physical activity

     Stress can be one of the biggest challenges for our minds to face. We live in such a fast-paced world today and most of us have a rather busy lifestyle. It is crucial for us to take the time out to relax our mind. Practicing relaxation techniques like meditation, or some form of exercise like yoga can really help to manage stress. Any form of exercise will not just benefit you physically, but also mentally. When we exercise, our body releases happy hormones and fuels us with energy.

   Eating healthy

     Make sure you are eating fresh foods rich in nutrients to stay healthy. Adequate Omega-3 fatty acids and vitaminB12 help maintaining the mood-regulating chemicals in the brain.

  

   Adequate sleep

     Make sure you are getting enough sleep. If you are not feeling too well, rest it out and let your body take the time out to recover.

 

  

   Learn something new

   It can be extremely effective at combating stress and taking your mind off things. Take the time out to do something you like, for instance, painting or learning to play an instrument. Not only do you learn a new skill, but it will also help with your emotional wellbeing.

   Self-care

   I cannot emphasize this enough, but every person deserves to indulge in some type of self-care. Exhaustion and burn out is a real thing, and not giving time to yourself can very much result in it. The definition of this term can vary for every individual. For some, a Sunday spa ritual is their definition of self-care. For others, it might be reading their favorite book. It does not matter what it is, as long as you’re taking out time for yourself.

 

   Limit gadget time

   Keep away gadgets for sometime during the day. A “no electronics” rule can help tremendously when it comes to detaching from the outside world and focusing on ourselves. Social media is a great platform to connect with people, but it can also have a negative effect on us.

 

   Mindset

   Sometimes, our success and happiness depend on our perspective rather than the actual situation. When you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, make an effort to replace these with positive ones. Practice gratitude in your everyday life, even if it’s something as simple as thanking someone for holding the door for you.

 

   Write it down

   When it comes to our emotions, we should try to express them in a healthy manner as much as we can because suppressed emotions usually result in psychosomatic disorders. If you cannot talk to someone, writing it down is said to be a good way to declutter your mind.

 

   Organise your space

     Speaking of clutter, try and keep your work and home space as organized as you can to avoid the additional stress.

 

Social support

   A strong support system helps us maintain our mental health. Taking the time out to spend time with your family and friends can be a great way to de-stress. Help others, but don’t mind asking for help too if you need it!

 

Get professional help if needed

   Lastly, if you are struggling with mental illness, it does not mean you cannot achieve good emotional health. Get professional help if you have to, just like we go to a doctor for a physical illness. Your mental health is as important, remember that!

 

   Good health and wellbeing are about consistency. Practice these tips every day and soon they will come naturally to you! It is certainly not easy, but surely a beautiful journey towards achieving good health!
